The Lewis Model - Cultural Dimensions

Aktualisiert: 20. Mai 2020

Another theory, which we will be focusing on and which shows us cultural awareness of different aspects is the Lewis model, which is used to help with rough orientations when working with people from different cultures, for example in sales or globally distributed development teams. Lewis classifies many countries in a pyramid according to their characteristics. His model also explains that each representative of one cultural type has, to a greater or lesser extent, parts of the other cultural types due to his or her individual personality.

The renowned British linguist and communication researcher Richard D. Lewis divides the cultures of the world into three major groups: linear-active, multi-active and reactive. The "linear-active" ones like to plan, schedule and organize. They carry out one action after another. Lewis includes the Germans and the Swiss.

In Germany punctuality and orderliness is taken very seriously, it is not considered good if you are late for important appointments, it is always recommended to arrive earlier and wait for the person in question, as this gives a good first impression.

The "multi-active" ones are very communicative and person-oriented. They can do many things at once and set priorities not according to schedules but according to the importance of contacts. These include the Italians, the Latin Americans and also the Russians. The "reactive ones" favour respect and politeness. Neither side should lose face. Representatives of these cultures are able to listen calmly and calmly and make their decisions outwardly without emotion. Lewis includes the Chinese and Japanese cultures and also the Finns.

According to my experience, which I have gained, this category fits to the Finns. Finns are very good listeners, they prefer to listen more than to talk. However, it is not very allegedly true how much the Finns should be shy, all the students I met or young people on the street all make an open impression and are helpful and talkative for a small talk, not more.

You can try to find your country in this model and think to yourself if its fits or would you categorize it different?
