Wild Horses in Iceland

The Icelandic horse, also known as Icelandic pony, is a versatile and robust horse breed originating from Iceland, which can also be ridden by adults thanks to its strong physique.

Icelandic horses traditionally live robustly in herd housing, which means that they are kept outdoors all year round if possible.

In winter, riding horses are usually kept close to the stable in fortified runs with weather protection.

Although they are small (up to 142 cm tall), they are very strong and are not considered ponies. The breed comes in all kinds of coat colours, often with unusual markings, and some Icelanders believe that a horse's colour may reflect its personality. In general, these horses are considered "spirited but gentle".

There is about one horse for every three inhabitants of Iceland, which means that you will see them wherever you go, graze slowly, play or just be cute.

Every time we saw horses along the road, we actually stopped to just stare at them and adore their adorable faces and bodies.

Since there are no predators in Iceland, they are usually not afraid and sometimes approach people, which was a truly heart-melting moment for me.

These are some pictures of the beautiful Icelandic horses, which can be found everywhere during the road trip. So chances are pretty high if you ever go on a road trip in Iceland and want to see these horses.
