Waterfalls in Iceland

Aktualisiert: 20. Mai 2020

There are plenty of waterfalls in Iceland, we have based our road trip on the most famous waterfalls and thus most of the waterfalls which were on our way to the Diamond beach.

  • Skógafoss

Skógafoss is one of the largest and most elegant waterfalls in Iceland. It has a width of 25 meters and is about 60 meters high. If this waterfall looks familiar to you, it may be because you have seen it in famous movies such as "Thor: The Dark World" and "The Amazing Life of Walter Mitty". Skógafoss is situated on the Skogá River in the south of Iceland, the cliff from which the water rushes is the former coast from the sea, which is now about 5 km away.

On the eastern side a path leads to the famous Fimmvöðuháls pass. You do not have to follow the path at Skógafoss for long to be rewarded with a spectacular and majestic view.

We walked up the longer stairs to be on the same level as the waterfall and the view we got was indescribably beautiful. The sun was warm and made the waterfall shine breathtakingly.

  • Seljalandsfoss

Our first waterfall we saw in Iceland was the Seljalandsfoss which is located in the south of Iceland near the ring road on the eastern edge of Eyjafjöll. 66 meters high, the Seljalandsfoss falls from a high cliff into a small lake. This cliff was once the sea coast. The land mass of Iceland has been slowly but continuously raised over the millennia and the former cliff is now a break-off edge in the country. But the Seljalandsfoss still has something very special to offer: It is one of the few big waterfalls in the world where you can go behind the water curtain. We had planned to do this but unfortunately we couldn't do it because the entrance closer to the waterfall was closed.

It is possible to spend the night right next to the waterfall: There's a campsite here right next to it where you could spend more time at the waterfall.

  • Gullfoss

The impressive Gullfoss in the south of Iceland is one of the largest waterfalls in Europe and is definitely one of the most spectacular waterfalls of the island state. The Gullfoss ("golden waterfall") with the two sights "Þingvellir" and the geysers in the thermal field Haukadalur belongs to the so-called "Gullni hringurinn" ("Golden Circle"), the most important sights in the south of Iceland. While we visited Gullfoss, it was so windy that my mobile phone couldn't stand the cold and went out 4 times until we decided to walk back to the car, as the ski pants and thermos leggings underneath didn't help much either. It was breathtakingly beautiful, but unfortunately we could not really enjoy it.
